5 Common Beauty Routines I Would Never Try Again


With a trip to the Spa booked today, I thought this post was appropriate. Thank-you to the lovely Angelica for pairing up with me for this one. We'd love to know the treatments and procedures you can't live without and the ones which are essential to your daily/weekly routine.

It’s common for people to stick with routines and products they’ve been using for a long time. Unfortunately, however, age-old tricks don’t always mean they’re good for you. In some cases, they actually do more harm than good, particularly when it comes to skin care.
And because we’ve all had our own fair share of beauty hits and misses, here are some of the routines I’m never going back to again.

1. Applying conditioner on scalp

It’s a common misconception for people struggling with dandruff and an itchy scalp to think that they need to apply a good amount of conditioner on their scalp to keep it moisturized. While the idea sounds reasonable, a flaky scalp doesn’t always mean it’s dry. Most of the time, these flakes are the result of product build-up. Instead of loading my scalp with conditioner, I concentrate the product on the lower part of my hair where it’s most needed, particularly the ends.

2. Waxing

For a lot of women, waxing is the best way to get rid of body hair. It gives a lasting result and provides a good way to exfoliate the skin. However, waxing isn’t really as efficient or safe as it seems. Aside from the possibility of bruising and irritation, some waxes contain harsh ingredients that can trigger allergic reactions. I found epilation as a better way get hair-free legs. It can prevent ingrown hairs by pulling them out from the roots. It’s not as painful as waxing and it comes a lot cheaper, too. The best epilators usually require a one-time investment and you don’t need to replace them frequently.

3. Using face wipes in removing makeup

Makeup remover wipes are convenient to use if you’re too tired to spend a couple of minutes with your face wash. Although they can get rid of your makeup and waterproof mascara, they are not as efficient when it comes to removing deep-seated dirt and oil on your skin. Aside from that, the constant friction and dragging motion you use with your face wipes can also hasten your skin’s ageing process. Instead of face wipes, I found micellar water more efficient when it comes to removing makeup. It attracts dirt, oil and makeup and draws them out of your skin.

4. Teeth whitening

Not all teeth whitening procedures, particularly the over-the-counter ones, work well. In some cases, they can even cause additional dental problems, like increased teeth sensitivity and damage to the roots of your teeth. If you are planning on whitening your teeth, skip the DIY treatments at home, such as the use of hydrogen peroxide and baking soda, and stick to what your dentist recommends.

5. Brazilian blowouts

The Brazilian blowout is a relatively famous treatment for women struggling with unruly and frizzy hair. Although it does give out a nice straightened hair, the mixture of keratin and formaldehyde used in the treatment can lead to a lot of undesirable side effects. It includes hair loss, allergic reactions and exposure to carcinogens. If you still have your eyes set on undergoing this treatment, make sure to pick an experienced salon to do it for you.
