Style Ways to Wear The Nautical Look, style, stripes, breton

This year, set sail for a fabulous spring and summer with a closet full of nautical-inspired pieces. With the right touch, this trend can be just as perfect in the concrete jungle as it is on the water; you just have to know what to look for.

First, embrace stripes—lots and lots of stripes. Your typical nautical colours are going to echo things like the water, the sky, ships, and even the little red rope around a life ring, so keep those in mind when you're looking for your palette. Different shades of blues, whites, reds, and yellows, are going to complement one another well in a striped pattern.

There are several different ways to wear nautical stripes for every occasion. Getting ready for work can be as easy as throwing a fitted blazer on over a striped shirt, or using a brown belt to cinch a striped dress in at the waist. For the weekend, try something cute and comfy like a loose skirt or a pair of black trousers and a casual striped shirt like Miranda Kerr's. Then, when you're ready to hit the town, try a striped crop top that will keep you cool no matter where the night takes you.

Second, find a pair of sailor trousers. These high-rise, flare-leg pants are usually fitted above the hips and adorned with silver, gold, or brass buttons at the top of each pant leg.

Writer Anna Murphy recently exclaimed that wide sailor trousers are a fashion do, citing legendary fashionista Katharine Hepburn as one of the trend's biggest fans. Murphy recommends trying the slacks in classic nautical colours like navy, white, or denim, and encourages adventurous fashion fiends to seek out bolder colours as well. Try red or yellow if you're feeling brave, just make sure whichever colour you decide always has the double row of buttons at the front.

And finally, to complete your nautical attire, you're going to need a few choice accessories. Sandals and boat shoes are easy ways to accentuate your coastal style, as well as striped, blue or gold accents for your hair. You can even try jewellery pieces with nautical symbols on them for something a little more obvious. But rest assured, just because you buy these accessories to satisfy a specific vibe, that doesn't mean it's the only time you'll get use out of them. If you take a look at different collections of some of the latest fashion trends, you can see how easy it is to repurpose aviators or striped flats with other pieces fit for the season—like sundresses or just a good pair of jeans.

The sea might be hundreds of miles away (depending where you live, of course), but that doesn't mean you can't look fabulous and nautical ready. Try out a few of these nautical-inspired trends and stay sea-worthy all spring and summer long.
